Police shot and killed a man wielding a box cutter in Flushing yesterday. According to an NYPD release, the unidentified 29-year-old man "confronted" an officer trying to arrest him in front of 43-32 Kissena Boulevard at around 8:30 a.m. and the officer shot his weapon twice, hitting the man in the torso once.
The Times reports that the shooting victim had gone to New York Hospital Queens late Saturday night complaining of difficulty breathing, and was discharged at 2:30 a.m; he then allegedly returned an hour later brandishing a kitchen knife and demanding syringes. Hospital workers called 911, and police began to canvas the area, finding him several hours later, roughly eight blocks from the hospital.
Police told the Times that the man had two arrests last year, one for stealing Xbox games, and another for possessing a switchblade and tear gas.
Three officers and an NYPD sergeant were treated for tinnitus after the shooting, which is still under investigation.
Sunday's shooting was the third death involving the NYPD since Thursday, and the second in 24 hours—Jasmine Lawrence died in a Bed-Stuy jail cell around midnight on Saturday after being arrested for selling and possessing marijuana. Lawrence, 22, had an apparent seizure in her cell, and was pronounced dead at Woodhull Hospital. Her death is being investigated by the Medical Examiner.
