NYPD officers shot and killed a man in the Bronx early this morning after he reportedly pointed a gun at them. According to the police, a 911 call for shots fired brought officers to the Soundview Houses on Randall Avenue in Clason Point, the Bronx.
Police arrived just before 2 a.m. to find a 25-year-old man brandishing a 9mm handgun, who refused multiple orders to drop it. One witness told the Daily News the man pointed the gun at officers twice.
At that point, police opened fire. ABC reports three NYPD officers fired 31 shots at the man, hitting him several times. The man was taken to Jacobi Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Four police officers were taken to Montefiore Hospital for observation, following the shooting.
One of the victim's friends, Ravon Morehand, rushed to the crime scene on a bicycle Sunday after learning the police killed his friend in a flurry of “unnecessary” gunfire.
“I’m real hurt,” Morehand told the News. “He tried to get out of the streets ... he was a sincere guy.” Morehand told the paper the police's gunfire was "unnecessary" and that the 25-year-old man had been a father. "His son is still asleep. To have to explain to him his dad is gone is hard," he said.
