Dozens of Black Lives Matter events and marches are scheduled for Saturday, including a vigil at Fort Greene Park at 8 p.m. and a children’s march at Carl Schurz Park (next to Gracie Mansion) at 6 p.m.
These gatherings come a day after nearly 100 Juneteenth celebrations—which intertwined with BLM marches—spanned across the city, with many planned and spontaneous actions that lasted throughout the day and well into the night.
The large march that ended at Central Park's Great Lawn included organizers speaking about the history of Seneca Village near what is now the park's entrance at West 85th Street. Seneca Village was a predominately Black community that flourished from 1825 through 1857, including many Black property owners. The village was eventually taken over by eminent domain for the creation of Central Park.
For two hours on Saturday afternoon, Citi Bike is offering free rentals and waivers of overage charges for all users, in support of participants in marches against police brutality.
The offer runs from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. across the system for a single free ride. Citi Bike said in a statement that the incentive is to support the “Street Riders NYC’s Juneteenth Solidarity Ride at 4:30PM ET beginning in Times Square.”
To use the offer, use code SOLIDARITY in the Citi Bike app between 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
