Just after 11 a.m. today, a severe thunderstorm morphed into a tornado, which then hit parts of Brooklyn and Queens. So far, no injuries have been reported, but there has been flooding and damage to trees, houses, cable lines and cars. The Breezy Point Surf Club in particular suffered significant damage, as you can see in the pictures above: "We were affected by it, the roofs were taken off the cabanas, our pool has serious damage. It took down wires and things like that around the club," Caitlin Walsh, catering and events manager, told us.
"We were in the office and we were watching the outside because it started raining hard and lights started flickering on and off, went through the pool and went through our private hall, and broke the windows and took the roofs off," she added.
We spoke to a few other local businesses, who said they weren't hit quite as hard as the Surf Club: "We haven't seen damage, the sand picked up and kind of got tubular, and then it went out to water right in front of the restaurant, and then traveled back inland over Brooklyn," said Lizann Maher of Kennedy's Restaurant. An employee from Breezy Point Lumber Comore added, "It started funneling. From where we are it didn't look like it touched down, just started forming."
