A school bus driver passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle and crashed, with children on board, into a Long Island home yesterday, according to authorities. The driver, 66-year-old Fredrick Flowers, now faces some serious DWI charges—though like the driver who crashed into a Staten Island home this weekend, there was some initial speculation he suffered a seizure before the accident.
Five students were on the bus when Flowers ran into the garage of a Syosset home—two 9-year-olds as well as an 8-year-old, a 6-year-old and a 5-year-old. None of the students, who attend the nearby St. Edward the Confessor Schoo, were seriously injured in the crash. Further, nobody was injured in the home itself—only two dogs were home and they were in the main house.
Flowers now faces stiff penalties under Leandra's Law, which adds penalties for drunk driving while children under 16 are in the vehicle. He faces six felony and 11 misdemeanor counts. Currently at the Nassau University Medical Center he is expected to be arraigned bedside.
It took dozens of firefighters to get the bus out from the garage.
