The NYPD is questioning a “person of interest” in relation to last week’s fatal stabbing of 28-year-old professional dancer O’Shae Sibley, police confirmed.
Councilmember Inna Vernikov tweeted that a suspect in the crime had turned himself in on Friday, and was in police custody.
“Wishing the family peace during this difficult time & hoping for swift justice & serious consequences for the perpetrator,” Vernikov added in her tweet.
NYPD confirmed that someone was being questioned, but did not say whether that person was a suspect, or if they had turned themselves in.
Sibley and his friends stopped at a Mobil gas station on their way back from a beach day at around 11 p.m. Saturday, according to friends and family.
They were playing Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” album, dancing and “voguing” when they were confronted by another group who claimed their behavior was offensive to their Muslim faith. Sibley was fatally stabbed during a confrontation that broke out between the two groups.
The NYPD is investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.
