A woman who was crossing the street in Downtown Brooklyn this morning was fatally struck by an elderly driver.

A police spokesperson tells Gothamist the incident happened just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Pearl Street and Willoughby Street. The 40-year-old victim was crossing Pearl Street when she was struck by an 81-year-old driver in a 2004 Ford, who was traveling north on Pearl.

The woman suffered trauma to the body and was transported to Brooklyn Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

ABC reports that the driver continued down Pearl Street, a dead end street, and crashed into scaffolding at the end of the block, which then toppled over onto a pedestrian plaza. Police said there were no other reports of people injured because of that. The driver was taken to Brooklyn Hospital in stable condition.

No arrests have been made yet, and the police say the investigation is ongoing.

Earlier this year, that area around Pearl and Willoughby was redesigned with new traffic calming measures, including curb extensions and advisory 5 MPH vehicle speed limit.

On Monday, a 79-year-old woman was killed on Long Island after she was struck by a car driven by her 83-year-old husband.

There have been 199 car fatalities, counting both pedestrian and cyclist deaths, this year as of December 1st.
