Commuters won’t be able to rely on part of the PATH system in New Jersey this weekend.
Service will be suspended in both directions between the Harrison and Journal Square stations from 11:59 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, until 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15.
It’s the first of six weekends this fall when trains won’t run between the two stops.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey stated that the work involves installing and testing four new switches to enhance the system's speed and flexibility. Crews will also demolish and rebuild a freight bridge above the PATH tracks.
The disruption comes after the Hoboken station reopened. That stop had been closed through Labor Day after newly installed equipment failed repeatedly, even causing a derailment.
Free shuttle buses will operate between Harrison and Journal Square, as well as between Newark Penn Station and Journal Square. The buses are wheelchair-accessible and will operate every 7 to 12 minutes, except overnight between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m., when they’ll run every 15 to 20 minutes.
For Harrison riders, buses will pick up on Guyon Drive near Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard. On Sunday, they’ll move to Essex Street from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to accommodate a men’s lacrosse event at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Additional outages are scheduled for the following weekends:
- Sept. 20–21, from 11:59 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday
- Oct. 4–5, from 11:59 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday
- Oct. 25–26, from 11:59 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday
- Oct. 11–12, from 2:30 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday
- Nov. 1–2, from 2:30 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday
