2007_04_nypdsweat.jpgYesterday was Palm Sunday, the sixth and last Sunday of Lent and the beginning of the Holy Week. It also means that churches are packed, which is probably why a brother and sister tried to rob a Brooklyn church yesterday. Juan and Carmen Sierra were arrested after ushers saw them trying to steal $1,000 from a collection plate.

Monsignor Rollin Darbouze was unsurprised, telling the Daily News, "During this time of year, there are suspicious people all over the church because there are bigger collections, and they will try to get it, instead of letting the church use it." Apparently the siblings had tried to rob the Holy Innocents Church before and were well-known to ushers! And because of their previous attempts, there were even undercover cops mixed in with parishioners.

The siblings (and Juan Sierra was wearing an NYPD sweatshirt) were charged with not only attempted grand larceny but disrupting religious services as well. And last December, a group of thieves robbed a Queens church on Christmas, but police made arrests.

Passover begins tonight - and an anti-Zionist temple in Rockland County was burned down.
