One woman was killed and another was injured in a Brooklyn subway station after they both fell onto the subway tracks—in between two train cars—and the train started to move.

A police spokesperson says the incident happened around 12:20 a.m. on Sunday at the Broadway Junction station. Officers found an unconscious and unresponsive 23-year-old woman, and a conscious 24-year-old woman underneath a southbound A train. The 23-year-old, whose name hasn't been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other woman was transported to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition.

According to the NYPD's initial report, the two women had walked off the train together and were walking on the platform, near the edge, as the train left the station. “They were arm in arm and one of them stumbled back and fell in between two train cars,” witness Kwame Martin told the Post. He said they were "visibly intoxicated" at the time: “Her friend tried to catch her but the weight was too much for her and they both fell on the tracks between the two train cars. Then the A train started leaving the station.”

People tried to bang on the train to get it to stop, but it was too late: “You could hear them screaming as the train rode over them," Martin said.

The Daily News reports that an internal MTA investigation shows the conductor did activate the train’s emergency brakes as it pulled out of the station, and that less than one car had exited the station when it came to a halt.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death, and the investigation is ongoing.
