A man was killed and two men in their 60s were injured when gunfire erupted at an apartment building in Brooklyn on Sunday night, according to the NYPD.
Police said the three men were shot just before 11 p.m. inside a building on Atlantic Avenue and Miller Avenue on the border of Cypress Hills and East New York.
Officials did not disclose the identities of any of the men. They said the man who died had been shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 65-year-old man was shot in the leg, and a 60-year-old man was shot in the arm and abdomen, police said. Both were taken to Brookdale University Hospital in stable condition.
NYPD officials said early Monday that the motive for the shooting was still unclear. Police made no immediate arrests, and were still investigating the situation.
Residents at the building Monday said they were shaken — but not totally surprised— by the violence.
Neighbor Cesar Candelario said he feels security is too lax at the building, despite its modern appearance, having been constructed in the last few years. The front doors open with codes that Candelario said have been widely shared.
“Everybody in this whole area, for blocks — they know this code. So people come in here to steal packages, people come in here to get high, people come in here to buy drugs, people come in here to do everything,” he said. “They have to provide us with a safe place to live. The building has to be secure. And this is not.”
On the seventh floor Monday morning, police were still guarding the apartment where the shooting happened. Streaks of blood, a shattered phone and a bullet hole in the widow were visible through the open door. Multiple bullets had also pierced the walls of the hallway, and a bloody trail of footprints extended into the elevator and down to the building’s front entrance.
Ricardo Sullivan lives down the hall from the apartment where the shooting took place.
“I barked on the landlord, my contact person from the building. I said, ‘Yo, dude, I moved here from a quiet building to come to this bull–t. What the hell is this about?’ He said he didn’t know anything about it and said he’ll find out,” Sullivan said.
Jacob Rosenberg, who is listed in property records as the owner of the building, could not immediately be reached at a phone number listed for his address.
This is the first fatal shooting of the year in the 75th precinct, according to police data compiled by Gothamist. The precinct encompasses Cypress Hills and East New York.
As of March 23 — the latest date reflected in the NYPD’s CompStat database — shooting incidents in the precinct overall had declined by about 30% this year compared to the same time in 2024.
‘Shootings and murders are trending downward by comparable numbers in the rest of the city. According to CompStat, 84 people were murdered citywide through March 23 of last year, while 56 people were killed in the same window this year. Shooting victims and incidents are both down about 25% over last year’s tally.
