The private email accounts of two New York University law students have been subpoenaed by an NYU Law trustee over the circulation of a letter critical of him, DNAinfo is reporting.
Second-year Luke Herrine and first-year Leo Gertner aided in the promotion and distribution of this letter that singles out school trustee Daniel Straus, owner of Care One Management, which is currently embroiled in a labor dispute and stands accused of numerous violations from the National Labor Relations Board. From the letter:
The National Labor Relations Board has charged his companies, CareOne and HealthBridge Management, with violating federal labor law no fewer than 38 times. U.S. District Court Judge Robert Chatigny has held HealthBridge in contempt of court for failing to comply with an order to return 600 striking nursing home workers to work at their pre-strike level of compensation. Mr. Straus has manipulated bankruptcy and RICO law to punish workers for exercising their clearly established rights to engage in collective action. He has hired thugs to harass workers and NYU students who were protesting his actions.
In a school as large and prosperous as NYU, which has become a top 10 law school, it should come as no surprise that there is an extremely well-off Board of Trustees, with a number of them private industry, like banking.
Outraged students and faculty have since started a petition, gathering over 500 signatures, calling on Straus to withdraw the requests. The students have told DNAinfo that NYU Law administrators "have been privately supportive, including covering their legal costs to fight the subpoena, but they want the school to publicly support the students' right to free speech on campus."
The labor dispute has escalated in recent months, expanding to four nursing homes owned by Care One.
