Police are still looking for a man they believe stabbed a 9-year-old boy while he walked to his Staten Island school Friday morning.

The boy, identified by news outlets as Jermaine Culver, was stabbed in his neck, arm, and head in Mariner's Harbor by an older assailant at around 8 a.m. yesterday while on his way to PS 22.

According to NBC News, Jermaine initially attended school at PS 44, which was close to his family's home. He was transferred to PS 22, which is a mile away from where he lives, due to overcrowding.

Brother Malik Williams told CBS 2 he believes Jermaine received minor injuries thanks to his winter coat. "I’m thankful for that coat because it saved him. If it wasn’t for that coat, I wouldn’t have my little brother right now," he said.

His older brothers say he is recuperating well at Richmond Medical Center, where he received stitches for his wounds. They told reporters Jermaine will no longer be permitted to walk to school by himself. "He's nine years old, he has no problems," Williams told NBC News. "His problems are school, math. That's the only problems he should have -- five times five."

Jermaine reportedly described his attacker as a black male wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt. Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. You can also submit tips by logging onto Crime Stoppers or texting tips to 274637(CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
