Two NYPD officers were indicted on assault and official misconduct charges yesterday after allegedly beating an unarmed teen in Brooklyn over the summer.
Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson's office and NYPD Internal Affairs have been investigating the alleged assault, which occurred in August and was caught on surveillance video. In it, two police officers appear to punch and pistol-whip unarmed 16-year-old Kareem Tribble, who had been chased down by the officers after they allegedly spotted him peering into the window of a van in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Tribble was reportedly unarmed at the time—though cops claim he had a gun in his possession that he threw away before the altercation—and appeared to have been surrendering to the officers, who have since been identified as David Afanador and Tyrane Isaac.
Yesterday they were indicted on assault charges, and are expected to be arraigned in court today. One cop was reportedly suspended without pay last month, while the other was reassigned to desk duty.
The attorney for Tribble, who was arrested on August 29th on marijuana-related charges, told reporters she was "horrified" by the video. "What they did to my client was not at all justifiable,” the attorney, Amy Rameau, told 1010 WINS. “My client was bleeding from the mouth after this assault. He was bleeding from the mouth and begging these officers for medical attention and he was denied medical attention."
Afanador faces assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and official misconduct charges. Isaac will be charged with assault and official misconduct. The Brooklyn DA's office has not yet responded to request for comment.
