An NYPD officer who moonlighted as a Mafia hitman in the 1980s and 90s has died in prison.
The News reports that Stephen Caracappa, who murdered eight people for the Luchese family, died in a federal prison in North Carolina last week. Caracappa had petitioned a judge to let him out of prison last year, asking for mercy because he was suffering from stage 4 cancer. However, Federal Judge Jack Weinstein denied the request though, telling Caracappa "There is nothing I can do in your case."
Caracappa committed a series of mob murders and gave the Mafia confidential information, along with fellow corrupt NYPD officer Louis Eppolito, between 1986 and 1990. Despite suspicions of their dirty dealings, the pair managed to avoid punishment until a drug dealer turned state's evidence and testified against them at a 2006 trial. The murders the two were convicted of committing included the killing of diamond dealer Israel Greenwald, whose body was buried in a garage and unrecovered until 2005; and Nicholas Guido, a 26-year-old who was killed in a case of mistaken identity in 1986 on Christmas.
Both Caracappa and Eppolito were sentenced to life in prison for their roles as mob hitmen, which reportedly netted them each $4,000 per month. Eppolito is still in prison in Tuscon, Arizona.
