A 17-year-old boy was arrested Thursday in connection with the fatal shooting of a Bronx man at a Midtown subway station on Saturday, police said.
The teenager was arrested at 12:25 p.m. in the Midtown North Precinct and charged with murder, criminal possession of a loaded firearm and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the NYPD. Police did not release his name. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney who could comment.
Authorities say the teenager turned himself in around noon Thursday.
Police have identified the slain man as Darrel Rodriguez, 26, of the Bronx. Authorities say Rodriguez was shot once in the chest around noon on the northbound E train platform at the 53rd Street-Seventh Avenue station, which serves the B, D and E lines.
Police previously said the shooting stemmed from a dispute between two men that began on the platform and spilled onto a train.
Rodriguez was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Police said they did not know whether Rodriguez knew the gunman.
The NYPD released images Sunday of a person of interest police said fled north on Seventh Avenue wearing a red tracksuit, black vest and black face mask and carrying a backpack.
Police did not immediately say whether the teenager arrested Thursday was the person depicted in those images.
The killing came less than three weeks after another deadly attack on the subway. On Sept. 30, police said, 25-year-old Jyrell Thomas fatally stabbed 59-year-old Mesias Lojano aboard a southbound J train at the Woodhaven Boulevard station in Queens. Thomas was charged with murder and weapons possession. Officials said the attack appeared to be unprovoked.
Murders, felony assaults and shootings in the transit system are all up this year. There were seven murders in the system through Oct. 18, compared with four over the same period in 2025, according to NYPD Transit Bureau CompStat data. Five people had been shot, up from two.
Felony assaults rose to 535 from 480, the data shows. The latest figures include Rodriguez’s killing.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Monday that he had “full confidence” in the NYPD’s work to apprehend the suspect, calling the killing “an incredibly painful reminder” of the work still needed to curb gun violence in the city.
