A 59-year-old man is hospitalized after being brutally attacked by a suspect wielding a pipe, police say. The two had apparently gotten into some sort of argument on a 2 train.
The incident took place late on Saturday, July 7th around 11:15 p.m. aboard a southbound 2 train near West Broadway and Chambers Street. According to the NYPD, the victim had gotten into "a verbal dispute with an unknown male individual which escalated into a physical altercation resulting in the individual striking the victim in the face with a metal pipe."
The suspect fled while the victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was treated for a fractured skull and broken eye socket.
A police spokesperson said that it was unclear what the suspect, who had been panhandling on the train, and victim were arguing about.
The suspect is described being in his 20's and was last seen wearing a black cap, blue T-shirt and dark pants. Video from another passenger shows him pushed a cart.
Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime stoppers website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577. All calls are strictly confidential.
