The 2012 Olympics were a big success for London and big business for NBC but if you are still upset that they weren't held in NYC, don't be. (You're not, are you?) When it comes to the really important part of the Olympics package for host cities—tourism!—we still took gold.
Mitchell Moss and Carson Qing at NYU's Rudin Center looked at average figures from tourism boards in NYC and London and damn we did really well this Olympic season. We beat the foggy city across the pond in tourists-per-day (538,000 to 429,000) and had a higher hotel occupancy rate (93 percent to 80 percent). And since the cities are roughly the same size, this isn't an issue of population disparity.
So much for our tourism bubble being about to burst! We win!
