Tourist-avoiding New Yorkers, be warned: The United States’ 250th anniversary celebration next year is expected to bring 6 million visitors over six days, including more than 450,000 overnight guests, city officials announced this week.

The event, billed as the “largest international maritime gathering in modern American history,” is projected to generate $2.85 billion in economic activity for New York City, according to a new study by the city’s Economic Development Corporation. That’s more than the expected $2 billion from hosting regional FIFA World Cup matches the same year.

The waterfront celebration is scheduled for July 3-8, 2026, and will stretch across the Port of New York and New Jersey. It will feature an International Naval Review and an aerial demonstration led by the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels.

That July 4, more than 30 tall ships are slated to sail in the International Parade of Tall Ships, followed by a fireworks show over the Manhattan skyline.

Melanie Arroyave, a 27-year-old junior grade lieutenant with the Coast Guard, said it’s especially meaningful to see the event take place so close to home.

“I'm from Jersey City, New Jersey, right over the water, so being on the Hudson River is basically being home,” she said. “To know that in a year that it's going to be filled with boats, more than it is on a daily basis, and that the Blue Angels are coming and that the skies are going to be filled with aircrafts, it’s going to be awesome for everybody in the area to experience.”

The event is being organized by Sail4th 250, a nonprofit that’s been planning the celebration since 2020.

“I'm looking forward to seeing those ships come parade up the harbor, I’m looking forward to seeing the faces of people along the shoreline that have never seen anything like this in their lives just to really kind of take that moment in,” he said.
