The New York City Council will hold a joint oversight hearing Tuesday morning with food policy and social service officials to address concerns over the quality of food served at shelters across the five boroughs.

The hearing comes as some of the city’s 182 migrant shelters face potential closures in the coming months. President Donald Trump has effectively banned all methods of seeking asylum in the U.S. and revoked $80 million in federal funding for the city's migrant shelter system.

Lawmakers called the hearing in response to reports of spoiled, unhealthy or undercooked meals at shelters, according to a notice from the Council. Officials also plan to examine the role of small businesses in supplying food to these facilities.

Additionally, the Council will discuss a bill, sponsored by Councilmember Julie Won, that would require food service contractors hired by city agencies to provide feedback surveys for those receiving their meals.

The joint hearing includes the Council’s Committee on Economic Development and Committee on Contracts and is scheduled for 10 a.m. at City Hall.
