NYC could get over 6 inches of snow this weekend, forecasters warn

It’s going to be a frigid weekend in New York City.
Forecasters say residents should brace for another round of snow as a bitter cold stretch of winter continues.
The National Weather Service says a low-pressure system moving through the region could bring more than 6 inches of snow between Sunday and Monday. The city’s Emergency Management agency is urging New Yorkers to prepare for extreme cold and potentially dangerous conditions.
Temperatures are expected to dip into the teens for much of the week. According to the National Weather Service’s seven-day forecast, there’s a 50% chance of snow late Saturday night after 1 a.m., with a low of 13 degrees.
On Sunday, snow is expected to continue, with a high of just 19 degrees and a 50% chance of additional accumulation. Snow may linger into Monday, currently forecast with a 30% chance of precipitation.
James Connolly, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, advised New Yorkers to be cautious, especially if they’re planning to travel.
“There is a consensus that this gives us at least some snow,” he said. “Make sure they have some emergency kit in their car if there’s a heavy snowstorm — again, we’re not sure how much, if any, snow is gonna fall, but you always wanna make sure you have the snow brush in the car, even a shovel.”
The city’s emergency management agency is warning of “dangerous life-threatening conditions for anyone without proper winter clothing and gear outdoors or reliable heat indoors.”
The department is encouraging residents to dress warmly, limit time outside and check in on neighbors and friends.
“I can’t say with 100% positivity that there’s gonna be more snow at this time of year, February, March, y’know,” Connolly said. “But I would expect some snow at least through the end of winter.”
City sanitation crews are working to clear snow from steps, crosswalks, and other key pedestrian areas this week.
Homeowners are also being urged to take steps to prevent pipes from freezing.
How to stay informed through the snow
- News updates and alerts: Tune in to WNYC 93.9 FM and AM 820, use the WNYC app and check back on Gothamist for regular updates.
- Weather updates: Check forecasts, current conditions and hazard alerts from the National Weather Service in New York and New Jersey.

- Department of Sanitation: See snow alerts and advisories about salt spreading, service changes and operations updates. Reminder: Property owners can face fines if they don’t clear their own sidewalks. The department is also looking to hire emergency snow shovelers.
- Social updates — NYC: NYC Emergency Management also posts updates on X. You might want to keep an eye on feeds from Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul.
- Social Updates — NJ: New Jersey posts updates on its ReadyNJ feed. You may want to watch out for alerts from the NJ State Police and Gov. Mikie Sherrill as well.
- Transit services: Keep tabs on alerts from the MTA, Metro-North Railroad, Long Island Rail Road, NJ Transit and Amtrak.
- Road conditions: Traffic maps are at 511NY.org and 511NJ.org.
- Power outages — NY: Power companies throughout the region maintain power maps. Check Con Edison for New York City and Westchester, PSEG in Long Island, Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corp. in the Mid-Hudson Valley, and Orange and Rockland Utilities.
- Power outages — NJ: Maps are available from JCP&L, PSE&G and Atlantic City Electric.
- School closings, delays, remote learning: See updates from New York City Public Schools or check on the alerts used by your school district.
- Warming centers: Information on NYC homeless drop-in centers is here. Information on NJ warming centers is here.
- Flooding: When snow melts, waters may swell. Monitor the National Weather Service’s flooding observations and forecasts.
