Last night, Notre Dame and Army renewed their historic college football rivalry at Yankee Stadium. The Fighting Irish won the game decisively, 27-3, in front of a sold-out crowd of 54,251 fans, and everyone felt bringing the game back to NYC was a huge success. "It was an exciting atmosphere, and our kids fed off the energy. For those who felt New York City's not a college football town, it is a college football town as well: At least it was [last night]," said Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly.
There were many events around the city in the 48 hours leading up to the game, including Coach Kelly appearing on Regis and Kelly, and a game-day tailgate at the New York Sheraton. Notre Dame fans packed into St. Patrick's Cathedral before the game, for a Saturday Mass presided over by Reverend Ron Jenkins, the president of Notre Dame: "This is a historic weekend for Notre Dame. It's great to have our first game in Yankee Stadium and I think that God is always on Notre Dame's side," one fan told NY1. The News thinks the game reasserted Notre Dame's relevance on a national scale: "Notre Dame needs to play in New York on a regular basis. Rutgers may have designs on becoming the State U. for the five boroughs, but the Irish will always be this city's link to college football in good times and bad."
