The Powers That Be have declared that the official New York State dog is the "working canine," which does not mean what I thought it did. Indeed, our state's stalwart doggy has a job, whether he or she is employed as a police dog, seeing eye dog, military dog, drug-sniffing dog, airport dog, or therapy dog. The cost of living is quite expensive here, after all.
The bill was signed into law by Governor Cuomo yesterday and was sponsored by Staten Island State Assemblyman Matthew Titone, who was inspired by the beloved 9/11 rescue dogs. “To me, as a dog owner, a dog lover all my life, it really made an impression on me,” he told the Daily News.
The state dog pick seems far less controversial than the declaration in 2014 that yogurt is the Official State Snack, since yogurt is both disgusting and not a snack. Other official state creatures include the State Amphibian (the wood frog), the State Reptile (the snapping turtle) and the Official State Shame, corruption.
