An investigation is underway after a fire broke out in the engine room of a Staten Island Ferry Thursday evening that injured at least five people, according to the FDNY.

NY Waterway crews and the FDNY helped evacuate roughly 850 passengers from the ferry. The boat was heading from Manhattan to Staten Island when it stalled in New York Harbor and went back to dock at St. George Terminal. It was then safely anchored nearby, the Fire Department said.

Assistant FDNY Chief Frank Leeb said officials won't know for sure until Friday evening whether the fire is out. The crew must wait 24 hours before reopening the engine room to ensure the flames are extinguished.

"We do believe the fire is out," Leeb said. "But what we don't want to do is open up that door early and give it the air that it needs and then wind up with a larger fire."

All of the injuries were minor, according to the FDNY.

The blaze forced the ferry to anchor near Bayonne, New Jersey.

The new $85 million dollar boat went into service earlier this year.
