Nearly 100 people were rescued after a yacht ran aground near Governor's Island yesterday. The incident happened around 10 p.m. Saturday when the Hornblower Cruises and Events dinner cruise, which was carrying 91 passengers, started having trouble in New York Harbor.
It's unclear what caused the problems, but the ship had to run aground; the passengers were taken to Pier 40, and no one was injured. Cameron Clark, the Vice President and General Manager of Hornblower Cruises and Events, released this statement:
One of our excursion vessels experienced a loss of propulsion...we secured the vessel on Governors Island temporarily, and transferred all 91 passengers to one of our other vessels to complete their cruise and return them to our dock at Pier 40. There were no injuries, and the passengers and crew were never in any danger. Hornblower Cruises & Events is proud of its impeccable safety record operating in the harbor. Ensuring the well-being and comfort of our guests is our highest priority. We thank the Coast Guard and the NYPD Harbor Unit, our partners on the water, for standing by this evening and ensuring the safety of our passengers.
ABC adds that when the problems began, the yacht opened the bar "to ensure people had a good time" as they were waiting on FDNY, NYPD, OEM, USCG and other agencies' boats to take them back to the pier.
