A line of severe thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected to thrash the city on Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
Driven by an approaching cold front, the thunderstorms may bring heavy rain at times and gusts up to 45 mph, the National Weather Service said. The cold front will also bring cooler weather this evening after 6 p.m. with temperatures dropping to the 40s, and gusts of wind up to 30 mph overnight as the rain departs. Isolated hail may also occur with frequent lightning strikes, said the National Weather Service.
There may be smaller gusts persisting into Thursday, with winds of 15 to 20 mph and gusts up to 30 to 40 mph before dying down in the evening.
The city Department of Transportation is advising restaurants with outdoor dining to secure furniture and prepare to take down tents and umbrellas.
The National Weather Service said the thunderstorm alert covers a large swath of the northeast, with parts of Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania also on alert until 6 p.m.
