2013 has started with many, many bangs. Though the last murder of 2012 in NYC was a stabbing, the first murder of 2013 has a high chance of being a shooting: In just the first few hours of the new year at least seven people have been shot in the Big Apple. Luckily, at the moment all the victims appear likely to survive.
According to the NYPD, the year's first victim of gunfire was a 32-year-old man shot in the stomach on White Plains Road in the Bronx around 2 a.m. Police are still looking for the gunman in that incident. At almost the same time a 19-year-old was shot in the back on Irving Avenue in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
Around 4:30 a.m. a man was shot in the legs at the Queensbridge Houses in Astoria, Queens and then at 5 a.m. a woman was shot in the arm on Webster Avenue in the Bronx. Not long after a man shot in the stomach was brought to Kings County Hospital. Around the same time another man was shot in the stomach on Osgood Avenue in Staten Island and finally around 7 a.m. a man was shot on East 138th Street in the Bronx. On the positive side, according to authorities, none of these incidents have proven fatal so far.
In addition, there has also been one report of a police officer discharging their weapon this year when police shot at a suspect near the Brownsville Houses in Brooklyn around 2 a.m. No one was reported injured in that incident and further details are currently not available.
