Last week ended with the stars, well atmosphere, aligned to produce copious amounts of rain. And rain it did, with more than 1.5 inches being measured at Central Park and a bit more than that from Coney Island up to LaGuardia. The alignment is almost reversed at the start of this week to bring us a mix of sun and clouds today and mostly sunny skies tomorrow. There’s a tiny chance some of this afternoon's clouds could produce a rain shower but don’t hold your breath. Today’s high will be in the low 70s and Tuesday should warm to at least the mid 70s.
The surface high pressure system bringing the pleasant weather will move offshore by late Tuesday, pushed away by a low pressure system that’s slowly making its way across the northern tier of states. Combine that with a lazy upper level low off the New England coast and we have the makings of showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday. The upper level low will trap us in the cruddy northeasterly flow that will keep the temperature to the upper 60s or lower 70s.
The forecast is looking a bit iffy for the start of the Memorial Day weekend, with more cloudy, cool and showery weather currently expected on Friday and perhaps Saturday. A weak high pressure system is expected to move in late Saturday and that should clear up the skies and bring warmer weather. Sunday and Monday should reach the mid 70s and we could see more summer-like upper 70s by the middle of next week.
