Ah, February 2nd. Groundhog Day. Astronomically today is a cross-quarter day, meaning the midway point of winter. Reported ice amounts in the city ranged from 0.10 inches on the Upper West Side to half-an-inch at the Bronx Zoo. The city lucked out with less than an inch of snow in most locations. Two more inches of snow and this winter will creep past 1872-73 and 1874-75 to become the fourth snowiest winter on record. However, Chuck didn't see his shadow this morning and it's not clear when the next significant snow will occur.
For today the temperature has finally crawled above freezing. Watch out for falling ice chunks! Any more rain today should be of the non-freezing variety as the high will be close to 40 degrees before dropping later this afternoon. Watch out for black ice tonight! Tomorrow's high under mostly sunny skies will be in the upper 20s but a strong breeze will make it feel cooler. Friday will be even sunnier and slightly warmer. Watch out for... a pleasant day!?
The weekend forecast is murky. A storm is clearly going to form and move up the coast but it is not yet clear whether it will be rain or snow to hit the city on Saturday. The local Weather Service office, which is now on Facebook, is leaning toward rain for the city and potentially heavy snow to the north and west. The sun should return by Sunday.
