If it's the day before the Jets-Indianapolis Colts AFC Championship Game, it's time to examine the meaning of Mark Sanchez's t-shirts! (Because the beard is old news.) The rookie Jets quarterback sported a "Wonderboy" shirt yesterday and Sanchez explained, "I’ve had it for a while. I’m wearing everything that could bring a little something good.”
"Wonderboy" is a reference to the character Roy Hobbs in The Natural, Bernard Malamud's baseball novel-turned-movie; the AP reminds us, "Hobbs carves his beloved bat, 'Wonderboy,' out of a tree that was split in half by a lightning bolt," and the logo on Sanchez's shirt is the same one as depicted in the bat in the movie. Sanchez also said, "Anything to keep the good karma going," and said of the frenzy, "I am just excited. I'm excited. You know, thrilled at the opportunity, thankful for the guys around me and ready."
In other Jets fashion news, coach Rex Ryan, he of the 350-pound frame, isn't bothered by the sale of AFC Championship tchotchkes, even before the game is played, "You can’t buy a four-extra-large T-shirt anyway, so I don’t care about that stuff."
