The man who allegedly shoved his girlfriend and child off a 15th-floor balcony last week appeared in criminal court for the first time Wednesday — from a hospital bed in a psychiatric ward.
Angel Carrasco, 31, was arraigned before Judge Cary Fischer in Bronx Criminal Court, a week after police found 23-year-old Nathaly Ramirez and 8-month-old Angel Novaly Carrasco Ramirez on the ground outside their building in the Bronx's Allerton neighborhood. The fall killed Ramirez, but her infant daughter survived and remains in critical but stable condition at a local hospital, according to police.
Carrasco was arrested at a friend’s house two days after the incident, according to NYPD officials, and charged with murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. He was taken to a psychiatric hospital after he appeared smiling and laughing while leaving a Bronx precinct to be transported to court.
He was still being treated there when he appeared on screen in the courtroom on Wednesday. Carrasco answered procedural questions — such as whether he could see and hear his attorneys — but did not enter a plea or make any other statements.
Judge Cary Fischer issued an order of protection that will bar Carrasco from ever trying to contact his infant daughter, and ordered him held in custody as the case proceeds.
Carrasco's attorneys asked for him to be kept in protective custody, which the judge granted.
Carrasco’s next court date will be Nov. 4.
Neighbors, local clergy and family members held a vigil for Ramirez and her daughter outside their building over the weekend.
Charles Lane contributed reporting.
