A man stabbed and slashed at least two court officers inside a criminal courthouse in Lower Manhattan Monday morning, in what court officials said appeared to be a “targeted attack.”
The man, who has not yet been publicly identified, attacked the officers in the lobby of 100 Centre St. shortly before 9:45 a.m., courts spokesperson Al Baker said in a statement. He said court officers stopped the man and disarmed him near the magnetometers that visitors pass through for security checks on their way into the building. Officers then took the man into custody.
“The assaults, captured on surveillance video, appeared preliminarily to be a targeted attack of the uniformed officers working security details at the courthouse,” Baker said.
He did not share any possible motives and said the New York State Unified Court System is still investigating the incident, along with other law enforcement agencies. A spokesperson for the NYPD declined to comment.
The officers' condition was not immediately available. Data was also not immediately available on the number of recent violent incidents at the 100 Centre St. courthouse.
Many high-profile cases play out inside the building, including the trial of former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, which wrapped up last week. Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, also attends court dates for his state case at 100 Centre St. He asked a judge earlier this month to let him appear in the building without handcuffs and a bulletproof vest, because he said the protective gear makes him seem dangerous.
The New York State Supreme Court Officers Associations, which represents state court officers in New York City, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
