A 29-year-old woman was slashed in the face on the Lower East Side Friday night after she objected to a stranger's hateful remarks to her friends, and now the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating. According to an NYPD spokesperson, the victim was standing with her friends at the corner of Delancey and Essex at approximately 10:40 p.m. when one Takeam Brison, 32, approached the group and referred to two of her male friends with a gay epithet.
According to the Post, Brison called one man a "f—-t" and asked, "Am I in F—-tville?" The NYPD spokesperson tells us the woman asked Brison "why he made that statement." That's when Brison allegedly slashed her on the left side of her face with a sharp object.
Fortunately, an off-duty police officer was emerging from the subway at Delancey and Essex, and the cop chased Brison down, arresting him at the intersection of Orchard and Rivington. According to the NYPD, after Brison was in police custody, he also used an anti-gay slur against the woman he had slashed. Brison is charged with felony assault as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon.
The unidentified victim received several stitches on her face at Bellevue Hospital and was subsequently released. Police sources tell the Post Brison is "a Bowery homeless shelter resident with an arrest record dating back to the 90s."
“As with any violence that targets our LGBT New Yorkers or their supporters, I condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms,” City Council Member Margaret Chin said in a statement. “The woman who confronted this man during his hate-filled rant must be commended for her courageous and noble action, and I am deeply thankful that she did not suffer life-threatening injuries. My thoughts are with her, and I wish her a speedy recovery."
