An elderly man was fatally struck by a yellow school bus driver while crossing the street in Queens this morning.
A police spokesperson said the incident happened near 67th Drive and 73rd Place in Middle Village just after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. The 56-year-old bus driver was traveling southbound on 73rd Place when she turned left onto 67th Drive and struck the victim, who has been identified as 83-year-old local resident Bing Nuan Chen. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Chen's wife, who was apparently walking with him at the time, was not harmed.
“The bus driver came in and struck him and crushed his head,” witness Sokol Kara, who lives nearby, told the Daily News. “There was blood all over. He was under the back [tires]...I think he was decapitated. [His] wife was crying with a napkin in her hand. She couldn’t do anything.”
Kara added that bus driver got out of the vehicle, saw what had happened, and started wailing. “She just laid out on the ground when she saw the man," said Kara. “She was constantly yelling and screaming, ‘Ahhh! Ahhh! Ahhh!’”
There were no children in the bus at the time of the crash, ABC 7 reports. Some witnesses reportedly said sun glare may have contributed to the crash, while local residents tell ABC 7 the intersection is dangerous "because it doesn't have any painted lines indicating a crosswalk."
The driver remained at the scene. (NY1 reports that the driver has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.) The NYPD says no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
