An 80-year-old man was fatally struck by a 6 train at Astor Place on Monday afternoon—the second straphanger in two days to be hit by a train at the station, according to officials and news reports.

The MTA says Monday afternoon's fatality occurred when the unidentified man was trying to recover an item dropped onto the tracks.

"We're heartbroken after a customer was struck by a 6 train this afternoon at Astor Pl while trying to retrieve a dropped item," NYCT Subway wrote in a tweet.

Third-rail power was shut off following the incident, which happened about 3 p.m., according to Patch.

Monday's death came a day after another straphanger was struck by a 6 train at the station Sunday morning, the Post reported. The man suffered an arm injury, according to the paper. The circumstances around that incident remain unclear.

The transit agency urged people to "never, ever go down to the tracks."
