Police are investigating the death of a man who was beaten to death just around the corner from the 108th Precinct in Queens yesterday around 2:30 a.m.
Jose Antonio Cocuyo-Malaga, 32, had been "drinking alcohol with some friends in the bodega near 50th Avenue and Vernon Boulevard," according to DNAinfo. When he went outside, he got into an fight with "two men in a nearby livery cab."
The Post reports that Cocuyo-Malaga, a chef, and a friend were trying to take a livery cab: "The driver agreed to take them to Astoria — where the chef lived with his wife and 7-year-old daughter. But Cocuyo-Malaga and his pal became suspicious when they saw two men in the car and declined the ride, sources said. The thugs jumped out — and a verbal confrontation that ensued turned violent, with one of them bashing Cocuyo-Malaga’s head into the pavement less than 200 feet from the 108th Precinct station house."
The suspects fled and Cocuyo-Malaga was pronounced dead at Bellevue. The police towed the car.
A neighbor described Cocuyo-Malaga, who created elaborate edible fruit sculptures for his catering business, as "an artist" to the Post, adding, "He was really well known.”
