A former rowing coach was arrested Thursday in the Bronx on allegations of sexual assault and rape stemming from his time coaching on Cape Cod, according to law enforcement officials.

Guy Monseair, 57, was taken into custody on City Island around 7 a.m. by officers from the NYPD and Homeland Security Investigations Human Trafficking Task Force, officials said. According to the Barnstable, MA Police Department, he is charged with four counts of aggravated statutory rape of a child and one count of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14.

Police said all of the alleged incidents took place between 2008 and 2011 while Monseair was a rowing coach at several different clubs on the Cape. Barnstable Police said they were made aware of the allegations last month.

It was not immediately clear when Monseair moved to the Bronx. NYPD officials said he started the City Island Rowing group between 2012 and 2014, though officials couldn’t say if he was still involved in the organization. There have not been any allegations against Monseair from his time in New York, according to the NYPD.

An undated online profile page lists Monseair as the head coach and executive director of City Island Rowing. The profile says that he grew up in Zimbabwe and moved to the U.S. to pursue his coaching career full time.

“At City Island Rowing, Monseair’s coaching philosophy emphasizes both athletic and personal growth, with a focus on resilience, teamwork, and discipline. Under his leadership, the program has grown to support a large team of athletes, many of whom have achieved national and collegiate success,” the page reads.

The organization did not immediately respond to several messages seeking comment.

In a statement, a spokesperson for USRowing said the organization revoked Monseair’s membership rights as soon as they learned about the allegations on Thursday. That means he is prohibited from participating in all competitions and activities under their jurisdiction.

USRowing also reported the matter to the U.S. Center for SafeSport, and urged other abuse survivors to come forward either online or by phone at 833-5US-SAFE (833-587-7233).

According to the Barnstable Police Department, Monseair will be extradited back to Massachusetts, where the case will be prosecuted by the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office.

Information for his lawyer was not immediately available.
