A 79-year-old woman was killed on Long Island after she was struck by a car driven by her elderly husband, police said.

According to Suffolk County police, Nancy Richard had just returned from dropping her granddaughter at the bus stop on Monday morning when she was struck by her spouse, Peter Richard.

Cops say that the 83-year-old driver was backing out of the family's driveway in his Mercedes S550 when he struck his wife. The victim was pronounced dead at Huntington Hospital. The husband was not charged, though his vehicle was impounded for "safety check," police added.

Unlike most states, New York does not have any special provisions for elderly drivers, such as accelerated renewal frequency or vision tests.

A 2017 State Senate bill to create a senior driver safety commission did not make it out of committee. That legislation was dubbed the "Bill Geller Act," after the New York man who was killed by an 88-year-old driver while walking in broad daylight.
