The holiday season has started, along with lots of revelry—and Long Island police are ready. Suffolk County police made nine drunk driving arrests last night with increased patrols, which will last through New Year's Day.
Nassau County officials say 50 additional patrols will be out this weekend and, at a press conference, the sister of a 21-year-old man killed by a drunk driver on the Friday after Thanksgiving 2008 told reporters she and her parents try to forget it's Thanksgiving, "We don't do Thanksgiving anymore." Newsday reports that Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano said, "Think before you drink. You do not want to end up in a police car. Take a taxi. Get a designated driver."
There will also be increased patrols at malls during Black Friday. Also, police say that they'll be looking at distracted drivers (in other words, watch out with your cellphone use, buckle your seat belts).
