After two straight close losses, the Yankees took the suspense out of this game early. A five-run second inning opened the floodgates in a 9-2 win over Indians. Curtis Granderson homered twice—anyone want Austin Jackson back now?—and has 25 on the season. Derek Jeter had two hits and now has 2,996 with one more game in Cleveland. Then comes a four-game series at home before the All-Star break. His chances of getting No. 3,000 in the Bronx appear better by the day. CC Sabathia continued his dominance by picking up his 12th win with seven innings of two-run ball. He struck out 11 and walked two.
The Jason Bay contract will likely always be a mistake, but at least the left fielder is contributing now. On Sunday, he won the game in the 10th inning with an RBI single. On Tuesday, he hit two home runs—including a three-run shot in the eighth inning—as the Mets won their third straight game in a 6-0 shutout of the Dodgers. Carlos Beltran also homered and opened the scoring with a two-run blast in the fifth. Mike Pelfrey pitched around trouble and left seven men in scoring position through six innings of scoreless ball. He struck out two and walked two.
