Rangers 6, Yankees 1: Number 28 will have to wait until next year (maybe). The best the Yankees could do with their backs against the wall in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series was to score a run on a wild pitch. A run that was scored on a blown call by home plate umpire Brian Gorman. Texas easily won the game, advancing to the World Series for the first time in franchise history, outplaying the team with 27 World Series titles.
The Rangers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning after Phil Hughes allowed a lead-off double. Neither team scored again until the top of the fifth inning when Alex Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch by Colby Lewis that got past Bengie Molina. On the play, Lewis' pitch actually hit Nick Swisher, who was batting, and then got past Molina. While Rodriguez scored on the play, Swisher should have been awarded first with A-Rod staying at 3rd. Regardless, things probably worked out better for the Rangers. Swisher grounded out for the 2nd out before a double by Jorge Posada and the 3rd out by Marcus Thames.
After giving up the run, the Rangers recovered nicely in the bottom of the fifth inning, when they would score four runs. Phil Hughes allowed three runs to score before he was yanked from the game with a runner on second and two outs. Pitching in relief, David Robertson quickly allowed a two-run home run to Nelson Cruz. Texas would add one more run in the seventh inning on a sac-fly.
Josh Hamilton was named the series MVP, hitting .316 with 4 home runs, 7 RBI, and an OPS of 1.458. The Rangers await the winner of the Giants-Phillies series, which San Francisco leads, 3-2.
