- Penguins 2, Rangers 0: Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin skated past Marc Staal before giving up the puck to Jordan Staal, who scored the deciding goal in this nailbiter in Western Pennsylvania. That second-period strike plus an empty-netter put the Penguins in complete control of this series before the Rangers get to set foot on home ice. The Rangers had two power plays in the final seven minutes but could not convert. They also had a puck that trickled threw Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury's legs that didn't count because the referee thought the puck had been smothered. Friday's painful loss is even more painful now. The Rangers skate again Tuesday.
- Yankees 1, Indians 0: The joy of this crisp win over playoff nemesis Cleveland didn't cancel out the dark cloud hanging over Jorge Posada's shoulder injury and trip to the disabled list. The Yankees fixture will visit Dr. James Andrews and could be out for a while. Speculation on whether he needs surgery varies, but his absence will be painful for as long as it lasts. He's just a tad better offensively than Jose Molina. As for this win, Chien-Ming Wang pitched seven shutout innings, striking out nine, and Melky Cabrera accounted for the game's only offense with a solo homer. The Yankees finish the series and the 10-game road trip Monday night.
- Mets 6, Braves 3: Carlos Delgado, not dead yet, hit two home runs, and Raul Casanova had one of his own as the Mets took the rubber game at Shea. John Smoltz was no match for Nelson Figueroa, who still hasn't given up more than three runs in any of his four big-league starts this season. For all the whining their fans have done, the Mets are 13-11 and 1 1/2 games behind the Marlins (!) for first place in the division.
- Red Bulls 2, Earthquakes 0: A Mike Magaee penalty in the 79th minute -- set up by Jozy Altidore -- and a goal in the 95th minute by Altidore himself gave the Red Bulls the win. They're 2-1-1 on the young season.
