In case you weren't aware, Brooklyn is hip with all the kids. Which means marketing opportunities! The borough has clothing (made in China), gin, Manhattan restaurants, beer, burgers, a farm in Queens and even a hold on a baseball team that hasn't even been a part of the borough for 57 years. Ad man Jason Rapport explains to BrooklynInk, “If Manhattan is filet mignon, Brooklyn is hangar steak. Both flavorful and fine cuts of meats, but some people like their steak a little tougher." And the Bronx is too tough to be anything but a boy's name.
Brooklyn isn't the only place cashing in on the brand. According to their data, Los Angeles is home to 12 of the nation's 67 "Brooklyn" businesses not based in New York, followed by Dallas, Charlotte and Detroit. Dominick Deluca of the Brooklyn Projects skate shop in LA said naming the store "definitely stirred up something. It’s like ‘someone had the nerve to open a Brooklyn store in LA?’...But I did it because it’s me, I'm Brooklyn." However, not all of the owners have a special Brooklyn connection. Kelly Marusarz commented, "I am actually the owner of the Brooklyn’s Doggie Styles in Chicago. Where did it get its name? After my six year old daughter who I hope will grow up one day to keep the groom shop running when I no longer can. I think it is a beautiful name and I plan to visit the real Brooklyn someday. I think NYC has got to be better than Chicago." Can there be a rule on not opening a "Brooklyn" business unless you've actually been to the place?
LA also boasts a few "Bronx" pizzerias, a "Queens" burgers, an East Coast Bagel and a New York's Finest Bakery. Meanwhile, New York has everything from a Taqueria Mexicana Los Angeles to Los Angeles Auto Repair. Nobody seems to want anything to do with Staten Island (except for this locksmith).
