Since coming to the Jets last spring, former Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes has made more headlines off-the-field than on it. Even before he was fitted for a Jets uniform, he was suspended for four games of the season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy the year prior. He played his first Jets game in Monday night's lightning bowl, but today, he is facing accusations that he may have accepted money from his agent while he was still in school.
Sports Illustrated has a cover-story feature this week on former agent Josh Luchs, who worked as a high-powered sports agent for twenty years, representing more than sixty players. He admits to offering money or benefits to many players, and recounts trying to recruit Holmes in November 2005, during his junior season: "...Steve [Feldman] and I flew to Ohio State to talk to receiver Santonio Holmes. We met him outside the football building, and he said, "Listen, I want to save you the time. We don't need to meet. I've been taking money from [an agent] the last couple years, and he's been taking care of my family too."
Holmes denied the allegations to SI, but Ohio State, Holmes' alumni, is investigating. It's unclear whether he could face any charges or another suspension if the accusations are found to be true.
