House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of Brooklyn said that one factor in his recent endorsement of Zohran Mamdani for mayor was the candidate’s plan to keep NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, calling it a key public‑safety commitment.

“That's incredibly important, from a public safety standpoint for every community, including as a high priority, the safety and security of the Jewish community,” Jeffries said Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation."

Jeffries had released a written endorsement on Friday.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist, confirmed last week that he would keep Tisch if elected, surprising some of his progressive allies.

Jeffries' endorsement came just ahead of early voting in a race that pits Mamdani against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, an independent, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

Correction: An earlier version of this article misstated when U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries first publicly discussed his endorsement of Zohran Mamdani. He first addressed it Saturday on MSNBC, not Sunday on CBS.
