An officer with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement discharged their weapon during an operation in Roxbury Township on Tuesday morning, according to Jennifer Davenport, New Jersey’s acting attorney general.

No injuries were reported, but the incident has drawn concern amid heightened scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement practices in the region.

In a statement Tuesday evening, Davenport said local law enforcement secured the scene with help from the Morris County prosecutor’s office and sheriff’s office.

She said the state was “actively investigating” the incident, which involved ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, and is in communication with federal, state and county law enforcement partners.

“We recognize that matters of this nature raise concerns within our communities,” Davenport said. “Public safety remains our top priority.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said the operation targeted a man from Honduras with a prior deportation order and a criminal record that included drug charges and DUI.

The spokesperson said the man allegedly tried to flee by ramming a law enforcement vehicle, prompting an ICE officer to shoot out the tires of his car. ICE officers took him into custody and no one was hurt, the spokesperson said.

The incidents came amid growing backlash over ICE enforcement tactics, including the fatal shooting of two people, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, by federal agents in Minneapolis last month. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul referenced their deaths last month while proposing a statewide ban on local law enforcement cooperation with ICE.

Federal immigration agents were seen making arrests near the Hoboken and Jersey City border earlier this month, as previously reported by Gothamist.

The Trump administration has also signaled plans to convert an industrial warehouse in Roxbury into an ICE detention center, according to The Washington Post. The site is reportedly one of several across the country being considered as part of a nationwide expansion of ICE facilities.

This story has been updated with comment from the Department of Homeland Security.
