Upstate New York is bracing for more serious snowfall on Tuesday, but New York City, Long Island, and parts of New Jersey may see some freezing rain on Monday night.

Aside from some scattered patches, the city isn't expected to see any real precipitation until around 7 p.m. Temperatures are currently around 35 degrees Fahrenheit, and if they drop, we could see enough freezing rain to make roads and sidewalks dicey. Ice accumulations could reach up to 1/10th of an inch, according to a release from the governor's office.

"Even a little bit goes a long way in terms of making dangerous conditions," said Faye Morrone, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in New York, who added that there could be some sleet mixed in with the freezing rain.

The Sanitation Department tweeted that they are ready to deploy salt spreaders to icy areas, and Con Ed has asked customers to report any outages.

New York City's winter weather advisory lasts until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, by which time the freezing rain will likely have switched to classic, miserable winter rain.

"The greater concerns are more west of the city, places like Orange County, New York, and Passaic County, New Jersey," Morrone said, adding that these regions could see significant amounts of freezing rain and wintery precipitation.

The first day of spring is March 20th, 2021.
