Bronx borough president Ruben Diaz Jr. is trying to think creatively when it comes to curbing biker gangs, and he's decided to hit them where it hurts—their fuel tanks.
"These dirt bikes and ATVs are not street legal, yet videos clearly show them pulling right up to the pump at gas stations all over the City," he said in a statement. "It is time for this City to consider a creative solution to shut off the fuel that drives the recklessness that has taken control of our streets.”
The legislation would fine any gas station that permits an "illegal vehicle" to use its pumps up to $1,000. “There is a time and place for dirt bikes, and that’s on dirt, not the city’s streets," he said.
The proposal comes on the heels of Sunday's violent high-speed chase, which culminated in the brutal assault of an SUV driver in front of his wife and 2-year-old daughter in Washington Heights.
According to NBC, one of the bikers initially believed to be involved in the assault has not been prosecuted by the Manhattan DA, and was perhaps even trying to come to help the victim.
Reckless dirt bike and motorcycle riders are not new to New York City, and the NYPD seems powerless to do anything about them. In the past, cops have even been instructed not to pursue the bikers because of the risk to civilians.
