And so it begins. A heat advisory is in effect from noon today to 8 p.m., and from noon tomorrow to 8 p.m. The National Weather Service predicts that the heat index will exceed 95 degrees on Wednesday and may exceed 100 degrees on Thursday. Cooling Centers will be open in all five boroughs (use this handy Cooling Center Finder to locate the one nearest you). The heat index is expected to near 100 by the late afternoon (actual temperatures will be in the 90s), and there is also an Air Quality Alert from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. today. Still, this is no excuse for flip-flops, gentlemen.

The Office of Emergency Management has some tips on beating the heat, and explains that "on warm summer days, the city can be as much as 10 degrees warmer than its surrounding areas. The city's infrastructure—largely made up of asphalt, concrete and metal—traps the heat. This is known as the 'urban heat island' effect."

Slightly cooler weather is forecast for Friday (with a chance of rain Friday morning), and a return to seasonable temperatures is predicted for the weekend. For now, we wilt. But when you've perspired straight through your underwear, shirt, and slacks before you even get to work, and then three people in a row ask if it's hot enough for ya'—just remember this:
