Gun violence erupted in Brooklyn overnight Monday just after the first week of April concluded without any fatal shootings citywide, according to data and information from the NYPD.
Though they happened in different neighborhoods, both shootings fell within the 73 precinct, which now reports a total of five fatal shootings so far this year. Six fatal shootings were recorded in the precinct for all of 2023, according to citywide shooting data compiled by Gothamist.
Police said an 11-year-old boy was shot in the left forearm at around 11 p.m. at the Brownsville Houses in Crown Heights. He was transported to Maimonides Hospital in stable condition and police were still investigating a possible suspect and motive. The boy’s name was not released, because he is a minor and a victim of a nonfatal crime.
Earlier Monday evening, just before 8 p.m., police responded to multiple 911 calls about two people shot near Mother Gaston Boulevard and Sutter Avenue in Brownsville.
When officers arrived, they found a 50-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest, and a 41-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
EMS workers took both victims to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, where police said the 50-year-old man was pronounced dead and the 41-year-old man was in stable condition. Later in the day, police identified the 50-year-old man as Anthony Barlow of Sutter Avenue in Brooklyn.
After a preliminary investigation, police said they were looking for a male suspect wearing all black clothing with a red hoodie.
The shootings occurred about a mile from each other after a week where no one was fatally shot across the five boroughs, according to data from the police department compiled by Gothamist.
According to Barlow's family, he was shot while enjoying an evening off of work as a security guard for a production company.
“Some guys came around the corner and just started shooting,” said Samantha Pinkard, Barlow’s wife of more than two decades. “My husband ended up getting shot in the back and he died, you know, right there.”
Pinkard said Barlow was the “most loving person ever” who adored spending time with their 35-year-old daughter and three grandchildren.
She was at work when the shooting occurred and has since been struggling to come to terms with his death.
“It's always two cops over there, but I don't know what they was doing when they was shooting," she said. "I have no idea where they was at. They need to have more cops around doing their job.”
Crown Heights has seen a particular uptick in shootings in the first quarter of 2024. Last month, a 13-year-old boy was shot and killed in the neighborhood on his way home from a basketball game at the Barclays Center.
Police still have not made any arrests in his murder.
This story has been updated with the identity of the fatal shooting victim and comment from Samantha Pinkard.
